Hands on: Sony FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G lens

After the lens with a rather strange focal length of 20-70mm f/4 G, Sony continues to launch an even more unique focal length lens: FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G.

Sony says that the image quality from the new FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G will be on par with what those who are playing with the first GM lenses receive.

I was quite surprised at how compact and light it was when I held this product in my hand because it only had a full-range f/2.8 aperture, so I completely allowed it to be a little heavier and bigger. Probably because I just held the big, heavy and long Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z lens, so I am very comfortable with this product. It weighs only 440g and is 92.3mm long (less than 10cm).

If you are new to using it, it will feel a bit counterintuitive, because when you want to open the corner to 24mm, you have to zoom. The default will be 50mm. This is easy to understand, usually due to the optical structure, when you produce mid-telephoto tubes with large apertures, they will have a smaller size than large wide aperture tubes.

Focal length 24mm when zooming out the 11 aperture blades of the lens. Above will be the 67mm filter symbols and focus distance. This is a lens that allows for very close-up shooting, the distance feels almost like macro photography. 18cm at 24mm focal length and 29cm at 50mm focal length. The maximum magnification is also slightly different: 0.33X when focusing manually and 0.3X when switching to AF. The outer shell of the lens is still a combination of rubber, a recycled plastic material that Sony has used for many years.

Click ON/OFF button to eliminate the sound of the aperture ring, very suitable for those who specialize in filming.

And this is the FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G aperture ring which will have 16 lenses and divided into 13 groups. , including 4 aspherical lenses, 2 ED lenses Even though it is a G series product, this lens still has a full AF/MF switch or Fn button so you can assign function buttons.

The E mount is so familiar to Sony players. Because it is a product aimed at being small, compact, convenient and belongs to the G (black) series, the FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G does not have a Linear XD linear motor. However, this product still works well with the new A9 III and still offers the ability to shoot 120 frames per second.

In particular, this is a lens produced in Vietnam. The Sony FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G when mounted on the body of the A7C II and installed with the hood. The overall finishing ability of this product is quite good, the rotation rings are smooth and smooth, in particular, I like the rotation when adjusting the aperture. Details about image quality, focus ability or video, see you I’m in the detailed experience post.
